You’ve signed the final financial document, you’ve paid the removal company, and you’ve unpacked every last box. Now, it’s time for the fun part… decorating! Whether you’re ready to throw caution to the wind and deck the halls, or you’re feeling daunted by the prospect of decorating an entire house, we’re here to help. Follow our tips and advice and your new home will be dazzling this Christmas.
Choose your budget
We’ve all seen the house down the street that is adorned with Christmas lights in every nook and cranny and an oversized flashing Santa… you don’t need to go over the top! First things first, set yourself a budget. Remember, there are Christmas parties to dance at and presents to buy. Work out how much you can afford to spend and stick to it.
Choose a colour scheme
Cherry red, Christmas tree green, or snowy white? There are so many colours to choose from, so narrow down your options to give your home a consistent, glamorous feel. Match neutral colours with one or two brighter colours to give a splash of colour and lights. Don’t forget the lights. All white for cool and contemporary or a multi-coloured extravaganza – it’s a point of heated debate. Which will you choose?
There are endless sources of inspiration to get your creative juices flowing. Some excellent places to start are Instagram using hashtags such as #christmasdecor and Pinterest. Blogs, websites, and your friends’ houses are other ways you can get inspiration. Keep a note of what ideas you like to keep track or start your own Pinterest board to keep everything in one place.
The Holy Grail: The Christmas Tree
Nothing says Christmas like a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Whether the aroma of pine needles sends you out into the cold to find a real tree, or you prefer an artificial tree for practical reasons, spend time finding the tree that’s right for your home. You’ll be staring at it for a couple of weeks and it will be the centre of your Christmas snaps, so it needs to be right!
What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than to make your own Christmas decorations! If you have children, DIY décor is a great way to encourage their creativity and festivity. Again, Pinterest, Instagram, and companies like Hobbycraft will give you inspiration. Spend cosy evenings by the fire creating your own Christmas wreaths, stockings and advent calendars.
Consider your friends and family
This is your first Christmas in your new home, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be resourceful! Bake some gingerbread cookies, pour the mulled wine and have a laugh with your loved ones as you throw tinsel around and enjoy the season together. You never know, they might even give you some decorations as gifts!
Don't forget the outside!
Take advantage of the extra space outside and get creative. You don’t need to waste electricity with endless lights, but you can still have some decorations outside to light up your new home. If you’re lucky enough to have snow, create a snow family! Then you can enjoy a snowball fight with friends in your own winter wonderland.
Remember to appreciate it
Decorating your new home is supposed to be fun! Don’t forget to spend some time enjoying yourself. Take some time each evening to have some hot chocolate and appreciate all your hard work.
We hope we’ve given you some great tips to get you started with your Christmas decorating. Remember to celebrate your Christmas in your new home and have a merry Christmas!
